Picnic Lake in Jewel Basin, MT
2011 • 12 x 24
I like the quick brush strokes and simplicity of this painting of a mountain lake (above). I wish more of my paintings showed such pure artistic energy.
The small canvas (right) was from a photo taken by my son, Neil, on the same hike.

I knew when I photographed this scene that it would make a great composition for a painting. There’s a lot happening on this canvas!

When I showed her some of my paintings, my friend, Jenni, asked me to do a picture with her beloved Texas Bluebells, which were new to me. She sent me a photo (see sidebar) that included dead trees, an asphalt highway, and a stagnant-looking pond. From that I came up with this scene.

A First Nations woman in Canada is a close friend who appreciates the connection between her heritage and the animal world. I painted this grizzly bear to watch over her and give her strength.

Alaska Cruise in Blue
2002 • 16 x 20
My father brought our family on a cruise to Alaska in 2002, and I expected to paint many of the scenes, however Dad experienced a stroke onboard which cut short the trip and left us feeling a bit blue.
